The Museum Of London Opens A New Exhibition On The Famous Work Of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes
According to historian David Cannadine, the author of Sherlock Holmes did not spend his time exploring and researching London for his work. Instead, Doyle just got the details of London from a street atlas, which was noted in Post and Courier.
The exhibition also has other surprises in store for Sherlock Holmes fans. Even the name Sherlock Holmes was not Sir Conan Doyle's first choice, it was Sherrinford Holmes.
A Victorian era theme surrounds the exhibition. It even includes an artwork from French impressionist Claude Monet, the River of Thames painting.
Another feature of the exhibit is Sir Conan Doyle's notebook, which shows notes about Sherlock Holmes' first adventure, A Tangled Skein. Note that it was later changed to "A Study in Scarlet." The first adventure of Sherlock Holmes was published way back in 1887.
As reported in The Guardian, The Yellowing Southsea Notebooks and some of the first editions of Beeton's Christmas Annual where "A Study in Scarlet" is featured, was owned by Constantine Rossakis, a cardiologist from New York.
Sidney Paget's authentic water color and pencil illustrations for Strand Magazine were also featured. This illustration was the basis of the likes of Sherlock Holmes for the countless adaptations up to the present. Some of the drawings also belong to Rossakis, while others belonged to Glen Miranker, who is also a collector and a former chief technical officer of Apple. Miranker is also affiliated with the Speckled Band of Boston, a very old Sherlock Holmes fan society.
Sir Conan Doyle tried to kill "Sherlock Holmes" in a story where he grapples Moriarty and jumps over the Reichenbach Falls. The fans of the book series protested to bring "Sherlock Holmes" back and Conan Doyle did resurrect Sherlock Holmes after a decade.
A watercolor painting of the Reichenbach Falls is also featured in the exhibition.
An added report from Business Insider mentions that the Sherlock Holmes exhibition is titled "The Man Who Never Live and Will Never Die" and is considered as one of the biggest exhibitions in the past 60 years. The Sherlock Holmes exhibition will be open up until April of 2015.
