'The Boxtrolls' Review: Boxed-In Fantasy With Demented Charm
Laika Entertained is known for crafting captivating and exceptional handcrafted stop-motion animation with "ParaNorman" and "Coraline". The intense detailing, which goes into their movies makes them a must-see for everyone who loves animation. However, it is their distinctive appearance as well as challenging storytelling that capture children's imagination, regardless of their age. According to Cinema Blend, "The Boxtrolls" is Laika's delightful and most daring animated film.
A boxed-in fantasy with a demented charm, "The Boxtrolls" is based on the book of Alan Snow, "Here Be Monsters!". The film is set in a dystopian town, which is tense with fear over titular creatures. The first scene of the film revolves around a troll wearing a box that runs off with a baby as the human shouts in a protest. The character is Archibald Snatcher who is a lower-class cad who wants to climb the social ranks of the cheese-loving society through exterminating the Boxtrolls that the local legend assumes they steal babies. However, they are quickly provided an access to the real life of Boxtrolls who only live by eating bugs and they only come to the surface for spare parts to fuel their culture, which is a deep-seated need to invent.
Movie Pilot said that the story of the film is simple. "The Boxtrolls" plays with various concepts and themes that have been done in different movies, although the story of the film was still considered as effective. However, its pacing is said to be the thing that hurts. For an animated film with 96 minutes length, "The Boxtrolls" has fast pacing. Even if it is not a bad thing, the pacing did not provide many people to enjoy the world and characters. But still, "The Boxtrolls" shows simplicity with enjoyable yet flawed story. It may not be the strongest film of Laika Entertainment, but it is still one of the must-see animated films that everyone will definitely enjoy.
According to Gulf News, the sensibility in the film is probably more than several little children will enjoy. "The Boxtrolls" has its enjoyably demented charms. If you want to have fun and explore a new world, "The Boxtrolls" is a perfect movie for you.
