Neil Gaiman Talks About Why Sandman Wasn't On the List Of DC Comics Films
Last week, when the Warner Bros. detailed its plans for a huge superhero universe based on the stars of DC Comics, its announcement did not include Sandman, which is another adaptation that was revealed to be happening this year.
Explaining why that is the situation, the creator of Sandman comics, Neil Gaiman, has revealed that it's because that the series falls under Vertigo Comics bracket of the business of DC and that those comics will make their own movies.
When asked about it, International Business Times reported that Gaiman responded on his Tumblr page by saying that it's not a DC Comics film, but it is a Vertigo film. This is a different slate of films and will require a different announcement.
The characters of Vertigo also include Preacher, Sandman, and Constantine and their world is quite darker, more down to Earth, and grimier compared to the intergalactic heroes and circle of capes, which are occupied by Batman and Superman.
Digital Spy also added that Vertigo is DC Comics' creator-owned imprint and the home of famous series such as Fables, American Vampire, Y: The Last Man, The Unwritten, and Transmetropolitan. It makes sense that Sandman's domain will not fit well with the DC Comics universe and through separating itself, this would provide those creating the films the level of creative freedom.
Gaiman is still developing Sandman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is said to be the lead actor. The quote of Gaiman indicates that an announcement is coming soon, which is really a good news for all Sandman fans.
According to Den of Geek, there is still no clue when Warner Bros will be making further announcements. But, even if Sandman isn't included in the list of DC Comics films, everyone who loves Sandman can still witness his power through Vertigo film. Although, no further announcements regarding the exact release date of Sandman have been announced.
But Sandman fans don't need to worry because based on Gaiman's statement, there are definite plans to develop Sandman into a movie.
