"The Book of Life", a whimsical, eye-popping animation, will be on screens this weekend together with "The Boxtrolls" another whimsical, but old-school-inspired animation.
Screen Rant said the film is inspired by the dead figurines of the Mexican Day. This visually stunning film will have an underworld setting, representing the afterlife through a candy-colored wonderland, full of traditional "Calaveras" in festive ghoulishness.
The meat of the story, as reported by the Click Online, concerns a complex love triangle between best friends. Joaquin played by Channing Tatum and Manolo by Diego Luna are both in-love with Maria, which will be portrayed by Zoe Saldana. Joaquin is a military hero while Manolo's bloodline is that of bullfighters, but dreams of becoming a mariachi musician.
Maria's decision on who to choose between the two will suddenly become easier because Manolo, unfortunately, meets death through a poisonous snake. He, actually, is the victim of a rivalry between two supernatural realms: Xibalba by Ron Perlman- the King of Forgotten Land and La Muerte by Kate del Castillo- the Queen of Remembered Land.
The "Remembered Land" is a joyous place with happy spirits, which are kept alive by those left behind. Xibalba, the King of the Forgotten Land is, actually, the Mayan's concept of "hell". La Muerte, being the happy one, will bring back Manolo for a temporary reprieve. This chance will be used by Manolo to win Maria's hand and his life back.
This animation's plot seems to be complicated than all others. Its love triangle's humor and stale will rely mainly on cornball gags as well as silly pop songs. Though minor deficiencies have been detected, the movie has tried to cover it up through its charming and gorgeous underworld view.
One particularly lovely image is represented by "Candle Maker" played by Ice Cube. He's a deity that imagines souls as flickering flames. It isn't death that makes them gone, but the passing from someone else's memory- a concrete poetry; comforting in a lot of ways.
"The Book of Life" movies might have used state of the art animation tools; however, it has seemed to derive its main strength from the wisdom of the old. The movie might be new, but the whole idea is already as old as life and death itself.
