Like Father, Like Son Japanese Indie Movie Release Date, Reveals, Rumors and Updates: Movie Wins Rogers People Choice Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival
The past few years have seen more and more interesting foreign language movies. One such movie is Like Father, Like Son from Japanese film maker Hirokazu Koreeda who also wrote and edited the movie. Hirokazu has done extensive work on documentaries and is also known for his work on the movie Still Walking that made quite the impression with famed critic Roger Ebert. Like this present film Still Walking was a family drama that Hirkazu admitted was based on his family. Like Father, Like Son premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Jury Prize. It went on to win the Rogers People Choice Award at the 2013 Vancouver International Film Festival and the Wuaki TV Audience Award at the 2013 San Sebastian International Film Festival.
This movie is a switched at birth story told in a unique Japanese voice coupled with truly stunning scenes. If you are into foreign language movies you will realize that the plot is quite similar to the Indian film Midnight's children. Two boys from different classes are switched at birth. Bringing to the fore the nature versus nurture question. One family rigid, upright and correct the other more liberal. When the boys turn six the families find out and of course to court they go. The movie has received generally positive reviews from critics getting an amazing 3.5 from rogerebert.com.
The movie was released on DVD in May of 2014 after a successful run at the box office where it raked in 31 million dollars. DreamWorks went a step further and acquired the remake rights after Spielberg watched at Cannes. Spielberg has really picked up the pace in the recent years after disappearing for a moment; we all thought he had retired to a life of polishing awards and walking his dog. From Television to film, Spielberg is definitely showing us why he's the highest grossing director. The remake is set to be directed by Chris and Paul Weitz and a release date is yet to be announced.
