Why Propylene Glycol in Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey Caused Recall
Consumer protection agencies have found high levels of the sweetener Propylene Glycol in Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey. This poses a health risk to consumers, officials have warned.
Health officials confirmed that the popular Whisky had abnormally high levels of Propylene glycol, also called propane-1, 2-diol. These revelations forced the recall of the whisky from shelves in America and Europe.
Propylene glycol is an organic compound used as a sweetener. Chemists describe it as viscous, odorless and colorless liquid.
The revelation that Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey had abnormally high levels of the sweetener Propylene glycol made consumers angry, consumer federation officials report.
Recall of Propylene glycol laden Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey was caused by the manufacturers shipping of its North American formula to Europe where health officials found out that the amount of Propylene glycol was out of compliance with European regulations.
Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey manufacturers apologized for the mishap promising to be back in in the European shelves in three weeks.
Countries mostly affected were Finland, Sweden and Norway. All did ask for recall of the whiskey from shelves. The recall has not affected the company's market share or sales. It is relatively stable and has explained the scenario very clearly to both consumers and the health officials.
According to chemists and food chemicals experts US Food and Drug Administration recognizes Propylene glycol as safe to use. In the Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey there is up to 50 grams of Propylene glycol per kilogram. The company says this is far too less from average standards.
However in Europe the level of Propylene glycol per kilo should not be more than 3000mgs. This factored the recall in the European markets. Consumers may be angry, but the fact is, the formula meant for the North American markets was shipped to the European markets. Of course the difference in each market regulations would cause a recall.
There are no cases of poisoning by Propylene glycol in the Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey. The complaint is just from the regulatory authorities.
