Top Gun 2 Reportedly Lands a Writer to Do the Sequel to the Tom Cruise 1986 Classic and Box Office Hit
Top Gun 2 may happen after all now that Justin Marks, according to the Hollywood Reporter, is in negotiations with Paramount and Skydance to write the sequel to the critically acclaimed and commercially successful 1986 Top Gun original. Marks is credited with having written over 20 screenplays. He previously already worked with producer Jerry Bruckheimer on War Dogs. Of course, since the writing of the sequel is still just being talked about, there is nothing concrete yet as to when the Top Gun 2 full movie will really be made. Those searching the web for a Top Gun 2 trailer, a Top Gun 2 preview or a Top Gun 2 Wiki will find there is none yet.
Obviously, there also is no Top Gun 2 cast yet. However, the now 52-year-old Tom Cruise is willing to reprise his "Maverick" role. In a talk a few months back with Access Hollywood, Cruise said, "Jerry [Bruckheimer] and I, we're working on it. If we can figure it out, it'll be a lot of fun. I'd like to get back in those jets if we could figure the story out." For his part, Bruckheimer also want the Top Gun 2 movie to happen. In an interview with Digital Spy, the famed producer of such hits as Pirates of the Caribbean, National Treasure, and Bad Boys said, "It's been in the works for 35 years! We really want to make it, Tom is engaged and so is Paramount, so we hope we can bring it to an audience shortly." In another earlier interview with Huffington Post, Bruckheimer said, "Don [Simpson] and I tried to develop something, we didn't succeed. [Tom] Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it."
Tony Scott, the director of the original Top Gun film, before his death, left Bruckheimer and Cruise with a storyline they can work on. It has to do with drones. Said Bruckheimer, "The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay." However, at this point, neither the very busy Cruise, nor Paramount, nor a director has officially actually committed to do the Top Gun 2 movie yet.
