Bible Teacher Myles Munroe & Wife Died in a Plane Crash; Christian Music World Offers Condolences
Christian author, Bible teacher, and leadership mentor, Dr. Myles Munroe, his wife Ruth and others were killed in a plane that crashed in Grand Bahama, Sunday afternoon. Severe weather was likely a factor in causing the small plane to crash, killing nine people.
Heavy rain was buffeting the region when the Lear 36 Executive Jet struck a shipping container crane in Freeport as it tried to land, Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell said. Mitchell said that a commercial Bahamasair flight making the same route, from Nassau to Freeport, had turned back because it was unable to land around the same time as the flight carrying the Rev. Myles Munroe and several members of his Bahamas Faith Ministries.
"It is utterly impossible to measure the magnitude of Dr. Munroe's loss to the Bahamas and to the world," Prime Minister Perry Christie said. "He was indisputably one of the most globally recognizable religious figures our nation has ever produced."
Born in 1954 in the islands' capital of Nassau, Munroe founded Bahamas Faith Ministries International in the early 1980s after studying at Oral Roberts University, a Christian liberal arts school in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The charismatic pastor quickly became an influential religious leader among many evangelical Christians, giving sermons around the world and occasionally appearing on televangelist Benny Hinn's popular programs. He was also a motivational speaker and the author of numerous books, including the 2008 best-seller "God's Big Idea: Reclaiming God's Original Purpose for Your Life."
Christian leaders and worship leaders have expressed their condolences all across social media. Expressing the horror of the situation Hillsong's Darlene Zschech exclaims: "@iamDadra: a picture of the people who died in plane crash yesterday. #MylesMonroe #Ruth Monroe and... http://instagram.com/p/vNuVOnnphb/ "/ so so sad x."
Christian music producer and Gospel artist Kurt Carr writes: "My heart is heavy learning about the tragic death of Dr. Myles Monroe & his family. My prayers go up for his family, friends & ministry." Southern Gospel singer and songwriter Jason Crabb remembers: "I've shared the stage with Dr. Myles Monroe on TBN several times. We've lost a great man of the faith."
Similiarly, worship leader Donnie McClurkin laments: "I am so grieved over the passing of good friends..great brother & sister DR. MYLES & RUTH MONROE ... His impact IS life changing..speechless." While Gospel newcomer and singer of "Take Me to the King," Tamela Mann says, " Shocked and sadden to hear the news about Myles Monroe and his wife our prayers are with there family. #MylesMonroe."
Offering his prayers for the family, Marvin Sapp shares,"My heart is heavy after hearing about the passing of Dr. Myles Monroe. Really shook by this news #Praying4Understanding." Motown Gospel signee Sheri Jones-Moffett comforts: "God bless and comfort the hearts of Myles Monroe's family and all that loved him! RIP."
Gospel singer and 'Preachers of L.A.' star Deitrick Haddon took to Facebook to share with his followers the reaction to the sad news. "My heart is heavy and my eyes are filled with tears over the loss of such a powerful man of God!" he wrote, "I read all of his books on the Kingdom and they opened my mind to the true concept of the kingdom. My prayers are with the family & the extended church family!!"
