Newsboys Members Michael Tait & Duncan Phillips Share About New Album 'Hallelujah For the Cross', Watch Interview Here (VIDEO)
The Newsboys members, Michael Tait and Duncan Phillips, took time recently to sit down and share with New Release Tuesday about their latest album Hallelujah For the Cross. You can check out the interview above.
"I grew up in a baptist church. My dad was a pastor in D.C. As kids we sang hymns like 'Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus', 'I Surrender All'..." Tait shared, "Hymns are such a powerful songs and stories and struggles of people in the desperate throws of life."
This is the first hymns album for the GRAMMY®-nominated Newsboys which features nine covers of classic hymns and one new song. The tracks include "Jesus Paid It All"; "Holy, Holy, Holy"; "It Is Well"; and "All Creatures Of Our God And King." The album was produced by Seth Mosley, who also worked with the Newsboys on God's Not Dead and Restart.
One of Christian music's biggest rock bands, the Newsboys, passed another milestone earlier this year with their hit single, "God's Not Dead (Like A Lion)" being certified GOLD by the RIAA as it has sold more than 140,000 tracks since January. The single is from their album of the same name and was helped by the success of the popular movie GOD'S NOT DEAD with the Newsboys' performance of the song on the soundtrack.
"God's Not Dead (Like A Lion)" was a No. 1 radio hit on the Billboard AC Monitored chart in 2012 and was the top selling track off of the album. The movie helped the song push past the 500,000 certified sales mark.
This the success of the single, the Newsboys are now included with heralded artists such as Bob Carlisle, Steven Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns, MercyMe, Skillet, and Switchfoot as Christian artists to reach that mark.
Forming in the mid 1980's, The Newsboys have been a staple of the Christian music scene since the early 1990's. Their early hits "Breakfast in Hell" and "Shine" "Take Me To Your Leader" and "Entertaining Angels" and great live shows made them a fan favorite among fans around the world.
After the departure of bassist Phil Joel and then the singer Peter Furler, the future of the band was in limbo. However, in 2009 Michael Tait (DC Talk) joined the band to sing and they went right to work putting out their album, Born Again. Then in November 2011 they released a worship album titled God's Not Dead which spawned very successful worship cover hits like "God's Not Dead (Like a Lion)" and "Forever Reign".
