Watch Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley and Vince Gill's "Will the Circle be Unbroken" at Little Jimmy Dickens' Funeral
During the funeral service of Little Jimmy Dickens at the Grand Ole Opry on Thursday (Jan 8), Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley and Vine Gill gave tearful rendition of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."
Standing with his guitar in hand, Paisley choking back tears said, "We'll take it from here little buddy." Then he invited all the performers and speakers at the celebration of Dickens' life to join him onstage for the song, as is the tradition at the Grand Ole Opry.
"This tradition that he began will continue with all of us. And we owe it to his memory to keep this place alive and going forever," Paisley uttered through tears. He led the sing-a-long with as everyone else joined with various instruments and vocals - a performance that will not soon be forgotten.
Dickens, a longtime Opry member, passed away at the age of 94 following a stroke and a heart attack.
Here are the words of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken:"
I was standing by my window
On one cold and cloudy day
When I saw that hearse come rolling
For to carry my mother away
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
I said to that undertaker
Undertaker please drive slow
For this lady you are carrying
Lord, I hate to see here go
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
Oh, I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow
When they laid her in the grave
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
I went back home, my home was lonesome
Missed my mother, she was gone
All of my brothers, sisters crying
What a home so sad and lone
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
We sang the songs of childhood
Hymns of faith that made us strong
Ones that mother Maybelle taught us
Hear the angels sing along
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
