'Game of Thrones' Season 5 & 6 Are a Go Says HBO as Hit Show is Renewed for Two More Years
"Game of Thrones" fans have reason to be excited as there will officially be a Season 5 and Season 6. The hit show just got officially renewed by HBO for two more years, which is no surprise as it is giving the cable network its largest audience since "The Sopranos" finale. This is the first multi-season pickup for the fantasy series which follows the George R.R. Martin novels, who is currently writing Book #6 out of an expected seven-book series. Season 4 is currently underway and they are still in events from book #3, so they have plenty of time to catch up.
"Game Of Thrones' is a phenomenon like no other," shared HBO programming president Michael Lombardo. "(Creators) David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling."
"Game of Thrones" Season 4 premiered this past Sunday and ratings were exponentially better than last season's debut. It was watched by an average of 6.6 million viewers, up 52% over last season's debut and 23% over last season's finale. The show added an additional 1.6 million viewers from the 11 PM and 1 AM replays, for a gross premiere-night audience of 8.2 million viewers. Season 3 had an average audience of 14.4 million viewers per episode across various platforms. Executive producing the current Season 4 are Benioff, Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield; co-executive producers are Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis and George R.R. Martin; and producers are Chris Newman and Greg Spence.
