Doyle Lawson Comments on His New Album "Burden Bearer" in This Exclusive Interview
Bluegrass Hall of Fame member Doyle Lawson is well known for high standards in every aspect of his musical career. Burden Bearer is the latest example of the exquisite precision in vocals, harmony and musicianship of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. The album is reminiscent of a traditional "call to a camp meeting." It is a special music event of Bluegrass Gospel and A Capella music celebrating the musical legacy of faith, hope, struggle and victory of the spirit. Old time renderings live alongside newly forged Gospel songs that pay tribute to the aged, but timeless Gospel convention music tradition.
Q: Doyle, it's such an honor to do this interview with you! Congratulations on the release of your new album "Burden Bearer." What are your hopes for this new record? How do you wish this album will impact your listeners and fans?
First and foremost is my hope that some or all of these songs will touch hearts in a positive way . Of course I hope that radio stations will play it and folks will add it to their collection of music.
Q: On this record, you have recorded some acapella songs, why just voices?
I grew up listening to accapella quartet music , largely due to the fact that my dad sang lead in an accapella quartet . I love the purity of voices blending in heartfelt harmonies. And too, I try and pay attention to suggestions from the fans . They asked why we hadn't been doing more accapella as of late , so we accommodated them as best we could.
Q: I love how you have included some of the traditional Gospel songs like "The Touch of His Gentle Hand," which is a highlight of the record. Why did you choose this song?
The Touch Of His Gentle Hands is much in the vein of the quartet style that dad and the quartet he sang with did . And to me, it certainly pertains to Jesus as our Burden Bearer and Comforter .
Q: But you have also included new songs as well. I have read that your favorite is "Best Friend." Tell us why is that so.
The story line of Best Friend just about says it all. Read John 3:16 and you'll see what I mean.
Q: What were some of your highlights in the making of this record?
Our recording sessions are very relaxed and fun to do . A good number of these songs were put together(arranged) the day we recorded them. And it's almost indescribable to explain my feelings when we get the song or songs completed.
Q: With almost 40 albums under your belt, is there a particular type of album that you have not done but would like to do?
Well I have a few things in mind to do that I won't elaborate on at this point in time. As the saying goes(keeping my cards close to my vest) but it will be fun for me as well as a challenge!
Q: Speaking of Jesus as our "burden bearer," can you recall an incident in your own life where Jesus was a burden bearer for you?
There isn't enough space or time to tell you the times He has picked me up in a most troubling time and gently guided my steps back to a safe place in life. I take great comfort in the scripture that reads "Come unto Me all the that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Matthew 11:28 KJV.
