Avril Lavigne Releases Worship Song After a Near-Death Experience
Canadian pop singer and actress Avril Lavigne returns with a brand new single "Head Above Water." The song is a prayerful call of worship as Lavigne sings of how God had aided her through her scary battle with Lyme disease.
The lyrics are basically a prayer to God asking for help weathering a difficult time in her life. "God, keep my head above water/Don't let me drown, it gets harder/I'll meet you there at the altar/As I fall down to my knee, don't let me drown."
Lavigne explains the story behind the lyrics in a statement: "One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed, 'God, please help to keep my head above the water.' In that moment, the songwriting of this album began."
In April 2015, Lavigne revealed to People magazine that she had been diagnosed with Lyme disease."I felt like I couldn't breathe, I couldn't talk and I couldn't move," she says. "I thought I was dying."
Her mom moved in to help take care of her, while her husband Chad Kroeger, stepped in when he could during breaks in his tour with Nickelback.
"There were definitely times I couldn't shower for a full week because I could barely stand," she says. "It felt like having all your life sucked out of you."
Along with the song's release, Avril is also working to bring awareness to Lyme Disease through her Avril Lavigne Foundation . The foundation has launched a #HeadAboveWater t-shirt to raise money to help people affected by the disease who aren't able to afford treatment.
