The 2014 FIFA World Cup play continues today with Portugal vs Ghana fighting for a chance to advance out of Group G and into the Round of 16. You can watch the Portugal vs. Ghana game live online from ESPN at 4 pm ET from Brazil HERE.
Portugal stayed alive when they scored in the final seconds of their last match against the United States, but their hopes of advancing now come down to their match against Ghana today. They are at the bottom of Group G and need a win vs Ghana, plus a United States lose to Germany to hope to advance.
Portugal will be a few players short today with defender Pepe out for headbutting Thomas Müller in their opening game against Germany. Left-back Fábio Coentrão and Hugo Almeida are also out with injury and backup fullback André Almeida and striker Hélder Postiga are both doubtful.
Ghana will be without Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari for fighting in training. Emmanuel Badu will likely take Muntari's place alongside Mohammed Rabiu in the midfield pivot, while Jordan Ayew is expected to return to the starting lineup in Boateng's absence.
Cristiano Ronaldo needs to look the world's best player again as he did last season and carry his team verses Ghana. Ronaldo will pose an unexpected threat for the Ghana centre-backs in this match, as he may be shifted from the left wing to a centre-forward position in the absence of striker Hélder Postiga. Portugal has had a poor showing in the 2014 World Cup and maybe this will be the game where they can start to turn things around.
Projected lineups:
Portugal (4-3-3): Beto; André Almeida, Ricardo Costa, Bruno Alves, João Pereira; Raul Meireles, Miguel Veloso, João Moutinho; Silvestre Varela, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani.
Ghana (4-2-3-1): Fatau Dauda; Kwadwo Asamoah, John Boye, Jonathan Mensah, Harrison Afful; Emmanuel Badu, Mohammed Rabiu; André Ayew, Jordan Ayew, Christian Atsu; Asamoah Gyan.
