MTV's New Show "Virgin Territory" Premieres This Week and Results in Serious Turmoil from Parents' Television Council
Reality TV shows are old news by now, and it seems that the creators of new shows must reach farther every time to create something that compels viewers to watch. MTV in particular has never been a network to shy away from something that may be considered a little too touchy or taboo for mainstream TV. Their new reality show called "Virgin Territory" is no exception.
The show focuses on 15 young adults between the ages of 18 and 23 who are attempting to navigate life as willing or unwilling virgins. As a blurb on the MTV website states, "Some of them are hanging onto their virginity and others are desperately trying to lose it." The first episode, which aired on Wednesday night, focused on four of the young cast members: Mikaela, Dominique, Kyle, and Lisa. Two are virgins by choice, and the other two are seeking to lose their virgin status.
MTV hopes that "Virgin Territory" will get people talking about important issues regarding safe sex, abstinence, and unwanted pregnancy. In the style of "Teen Mom," the main purpose of the show is to get people talking, in order to prevent a lack of awareness among young people.
The EVP Series Development and Head West Coast Unscripted Lauren Dolgen had this to say in a statement about the show, ""MTV has a legacy of documenting the lives of young adults and openly talking about sex with thought-provoking programming such as 'True Life,' '16 and Pregnant' and 'Teen Mom.'Through our ongoing partnership with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, MTV will continue this tradition by elevating the discussion of responsible sexual health to include the topic of virginity in a way that our audience might find surprising."
But will the show be more harmful than beneficial? Organizations such as the Parents' Television Council worry that the way the show is advertised will lead to the concept of "saving oneself" and being a virgin (whether by choice or not) to be considered as shameful.
"Virgin Territory" airs Wednesdays on MTV.
