Director and Actor Jason Mac Offers Exclusive Insights into the New Film "A Father's Legacy"
New inspirational film A Father's Legacy will arrive in theaters for a one night event on June 17, just in time for Father's Day Weekend. The movie is an inspirational story that touches on family, redemption and loyalty.
Here's the synopsis of the movie: "(A Father's Legacy) follows a young man (Jason Mac) on the run after an armed robbery. Hiding from the law, he sets out to find the father he never knew. Venturing further away from the city streets, he finds himself at the secluded home of a stranger (Tobin Bell). As the days pass and the secrets about their past are revealed, they learn that they might not have been looking for each other...but they may have been brought together for a reason.
We are honored to be able to catch up with the film's director and star Jason Mac to talk exclusively about this movie.
Q: Thanks for doing this interview with us. Can you tell us briefly, what is "A Father's Legacy" about?
Thanks so much for having me! A "Father's Legacy" is a Father Son story about family, faith, and redemption. It centers on a young man who sets out to find the Father he never knew. He ends up at this old man's cabin in the woods(played beautifully by Tobin Bell!). They weren't looking for one another but found a lot of healing and lessons to be learned from each other.
Q: How did the idea of this film come to you?
The film came from one of the toughest points in my life. When my father passed away unexpectedly. I found myself really looking at what this relationship had meant to me. We were fortunate as a family to be able to say goodbye as he passed on. But I remember telling the ICU nurse at the time...that it felt like my DNA was changing. This was a clear before and after moment for me. He was one of my earthly guardians who I knew would be there when I needed him. And now he is gone. That time period of reflection on what I thought a son meant to a father is the heart of the film.
Q: Who are some of your co-actors in this movie?
First and foremost I have to say how incredible Tobin Bell is in this film. He is such a beautiful soul and an incredible craftsman. Every day he wanted to make this film as good as it could be. I will forever be appreciative of him taking a chance on me and this story. And everyone else in the cast was so amazing and grounded. Rebeca Robles was wonderful in her role and brought such an impactful presence to Jean. And working with Gregory Alan Williams was a delight. He's so grounded in reality you can throw anything at him and he'll bring an authentic response.
Q: This is also your first feature film where you also serve as the director. What were some of the joys and challenges in directing this film?
A little bit of ignorance is bliss can go a long way. I wore a lot of hats in this project. From writing, producing, directing, and acting. It was incredibly demanding on a preparation level. Making sure I have everyone's back as a director and doing the best I can to elevate them. While also making sure I'm not the weak link in the scene. But to work with such skilled performers and technicians was a joy. Everyday, every single person was showing up to try their hardest to fulfill my vision for this story. Which is incredibly humbling and empowering.
Q: What does the movie have to teach us about relationships, especially the relationship between a father and his son?
I truly believe we need these Father-Son relationships. And I think the female side of it is so important as well. But obviously my experience is more intimate on the male side. But it isn't just about biological fathers. It's about coaches, and mentors for young kids. But also young adults. We have to be aware of when others are looking up to us and really ask ourselves what impact we have on those people. We can often so easily build someone up and we don't know the real impact of it for years to come.
Q: What are some of the other take-away lessons we can get after watching this movie?
I hope when folks are done watching the film that they call some people they love. And tell them they love them. Or to reach out to someone who has impacted them in a positive way. I hope it gives people a little reminder of the impact we can have on others.
Q: How can we get more info on the film?
Firstly, if you are free on June 17th you should definitely try to see it in theaters for a one night only event! You can follow the film on Instagram and Facebook. And I'll be posting some updates myself at www.imjasonmac.com
Q: What is next for you?
That's the question! I'm going through some scripts now to see if anything strikes me. And strangely enough I'm actually working on a horror film and seeing if I have anything to say in that genre. But whatever it is, I have to believe in it and put pieces of me in there.
