The Expendables 3 Movie Spoilers: Bigger, Less Bloody Than 1 and 2
In terms of casting, the third installment in "The Expendables" series will carry a bigger roster of established and upcoming action stars than either the two earlier films. Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger will return to reprise their original roles. But in addition, they will be joined by new set of cast of acting heavyweights which include Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas, Kellan Lutz, Kelsey Grammer, Glen Powell, Victor Ortiz, Robert Davi, and UFC mixed martial arts champion Rhonda Roussey.
With "Expendables 3," story writer Stallone aimed for and finally got a PG-13 from the Motion Picture Association of America. The previous two films in the franchise were both rated 'R.' Stallone said he wanted his script this time to be more humorous. During the Cannes Film Festival, he also told reporters, "We want to reach as many people as possible. It's very close to an R, believe me, it's right there. But I think we owe it to the next generation. We thought we'd join that club for a while."
Directed by Patrick Hughes from Stallone's screenplay, "Expendables 3" sees Barney Ross (Stallone) pitted against his former co-founder Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson) in The Expendables, a private company made up of elite mercenaries which can be hired by the CIA for off the books missions. Ross thought he had killed Stonebanks, who had become an arms dealer. But Stonebanks survived, and now wants revenge on Ross and his entire crew.
Distributed by Lionsgate, Expendables 3 can be seen in theaters by August 14, 2014.
