Coquí Brings a New Sound to Christian Rock with "Today"
New DREAM artist named Coquí is set to release his single "Today" on May 3rd. Hailing from Los Angeles, Samuel Jacob Lopez Jr., better known as COQUÍ, is an innovative force in the music scene, blending nostalgic production with infectious melodies for a unique twist on modern rock.
Influenced by the psychedelic sounds of the '70s, '90s boom-bap beats, skate-punk rebellion, and grounded in his deep Christian faith, COQUÍ's music is a call to introspection and conviction. His journey in music, fueled by his father's diverse vinyl collection, has seen him collaborate with industry heavyweights such as Young The Giant, RAC, and Crystal Castles, as well as touring behind the scenes with icons like 30 Seconds To Mars and Blink 182.
COQUÍ's distinct sound and faith-driven anthems have quickly made him a standout artist, challenging the indie music scene with tracks that are not just songs but rallying cries for a journey of personal exploration and truth
Q: Coqui, thank you for doing this interview with us. Tell us about your childhood and how your family influenced your love for music.
When I was about nine or ten, my dad, who was a DJ, showed me how to mix tracks on his old vinyl turntables. I got the hang of it pretty fast, and soon, we were jamming out in the living room every weekend while my mom whipped up breakfast. I'm pretty sure that same summer, I stayed with my Uncle Rob in Burbank for a couple of weeks. He was well known in the Latin music scene as a pro percussionist, and he brought me along to all his rehearsals and gigs around Los Angeles. I'll never forget that moment when I realized I wanted to be a musician. Maybe a couple of years later, I met some older skater kids at church youth group who were all about punk rock. They showed me how to play a Blink-182 song on guitar, and just like that, I was hooked.
Q: How and when did you feel called to the music ministry?
I started writing music about my faith in 2021, after a series of events lead me back to the bible. I grew up in a Christian household, but wasn't always living by faith. Years of losing myself to pride, selfishness and sin lead me to a dark place where I didn't even recognize Jesus. It was when I hit rock bottom, I finally woke up to the truth. God had revealed to me what I had known my entire life but chose to bury it in sin. From that moment on I made promise to God that I would only make music that would please him and help others find their way back to him, like he did for me.
Q: How would you describe your current sound?
Psychedelic Psalms, Revelation Rock, Apostle Punk, Hallelujah Hardcore
Q: How did you get to work with DREAM Label Group?
Lance from Dream reached out to me about a year ago after seeing a viral post of mine on Instagram. We had a great conversation about punk rock music, the state of Christian rock, finding our way back to faith, and ultimately what we could accomplish working together . It just seemed like a perfect fit. Shortly after, a signed a deal with them and the rest is history. I'm grateful for the opportunity and really stoked on the partnership.
Q: Why are you excited about your new single "Today"?
I'm just stoked for everyone to finally hear this track! It's been in the works for over a year-it was supposed to drop last year, but I'm glad I held back. Taking extra time let me fine-tune everything, lay down some drums at my buddy Richie Gonzales's studio in Burbank, and even throw in a new bridge. I've poured a lot into making this just right, and I hope anyone that listens will enjoy it as much as I did making it.
Q: In terms of new music, what can fans expect in the near future?
As far as songs go, you can expect grittier music production, experimental vocal tones, deeper lyrical content, and a lot more genre-bending elements. I'm also working on a few collabs with a some really incredible artists in the Christian indie scene. You might even see a live performance of "Today" dropping soon.
