Phil King Reveals How "Miscarriages" Has Been Impacting Listeners in Exclusive Interview

Singer/songwriter, recording artist, and worship leader Phil King is passionate about composing and sharing music that points people to Jesus. His acclaimed songs include the multilingual anthem "So Worthy," which has been embraced by audiences around the world, as well as "Psalm 23 (I Am Not Alone)," a duet with Dove Award-winning worship leader Meredith Andrews.
Recently, King released his new single "Miscarriages." Written and produced by King with children's choir and string arrangements by Tyler Michael Smith, "Miscarriages" aims to bring comfort to grieving parents while serving as an important reminder that earthly loss is only temporal.
Q: Phil, thanks for doing this interview with us. Your recent singles address needs within our society and our churches. Why should songs speak prophetically to our current situations?
Both my new songs "Miscarriages" and "Heal Our Land" are very much as you said, songs that speak to current big issues within our world and in America. I believe songs should speak prophetically to situations today because the God we serve is alive, and His word is "living and active" as it says in Hebrews 4:12. 1 Corinthians 14:1 says: "Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy." Why? Because the prophetic gift, even in song, can greatly help, encourage, and guide others to God's heart for them.
God wants to minister to our pain and through the issues we face today just as much as He did at any time in history. And as His people we are "Kings and Priests" as Revelation 1:6 states. Kings take territory and Priests connect people to God, and God to people. This is a responsibility I take very seriously with the songs that I write. In my opinion, Christian music should always bear the mark of either a King-by taking territory-or a Priest-by connecting people to God and God to people-and this is easily done when a song is prophetic to people.
Q: Your new song, "Miscarriages," speaks to a reality rarely addressed by the church. How did the song come about?
My wife and I had twins a couple of years ago, and about a year ago some friends of ours became pregnant with twins. We were very excited for them and were giving them some of our twin gear and sharing tips with them when they tragically found out that they had lost "Baby B"-the term used for the second child conceived during a twin pregnancy. This news is really what sparked the writing of this song.
Q: How do you hope this song will minister to those who have suffered a miscarriage?
I've received notes and messages from many people, and most of them are very hard to read, but I know that sometimes healing is in the tears and the mourning. I don't know of another song designed to give people a safe place in music to process the pain of miscarriage. I hope this song provides people that healing space with God over and over again. And ultimately, I hope it will fix parents' hearts and minds on the reality of Heaven and where their lost children are.
Q: Talk to us more about your vision behind "Heal Our Land."
I love to pray for America and specifically for our government. I wrote this song in 2024 before the election when there was a lot of uncertainty (and I know there still is) about where America's future is headed. I believe we are in the middle of a massive turnaround and reforming of our nation, and my vision with this song was that it would be like rocket fuel for intercessors and those who love to pray. I was also hoping for it to reach the ears of people who are in places of government, to give their hearts the courage to stand up for God. I've gotten some pretty cool notes learning where this song has ended up and who's heard it. It's very encouraging!
Q: In terms of new music, what can we expect from you this year?
Well, I'll just say I've got a lot of really good songs waiting in line that I can't wait to share with everyone! Readers: If you can, be praying for God's timing and strategy with the releases and follow me on social media to keep up with the latest!
Q: Are there other issues you want to address in your songs?
Yes, there are so, so many! And I'll be revealing them song by song through the year ahead and beyond. I have some other fantastic singles coming out in 2025.
