Chuck Girard of Christian Band Love Song Dies at 81

Beloved singer, songwriter, and pioneer of Contemporary Christian Music Chuck Girard has passed away at the age of 81 on August 11, 2025, following a courageous battle with stage 4 cancer.
Girard, best known as a founding member of the groundbreaking band Love Song, was instrumental in shaping the sound of the Jesus Movement and the early days of what became known as Contemporary Christian Music. Before his ministry career, Girard found success in the mainstream music industry as a member of The Castells and later The Hondells, singing lead on the hit "Little Honda."
In 1975, Girard launched his solo career with a self-titled debut album that featured enduring classics such as Sometimes Alleluia and Rock 'N' Roll Preacher. Across more than five decades, his music and ministry impacted generations, leaving an indelible mark on Christian worship and outreach.
In late 2024, Girard was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer that had spread to his lungs. After chemotherapy treatments proved ineffective, he and his family openly shared their journey of faith, peace, and trust in God's plan.
"Chuck's legacy is not only in his music but in the countless lives he touched for the Kingdom," said friends and family in a statement. "We rejoice that he is now in the presence of the Savior he loved and sang about."
Girard's influence continues to be felt in churches and Christian music circles worldwide, with songs and recordings that have stood the test of time. Plans for a public memorial service will be announced in the coming days.
Girard was a visionary worship leader, recording artist, and evangelist whose career spanned over 50 years. As a co-founder of Love Song, he helped usher in the modern Christian music movement, blending heartfelt lyrics with a contemporary sound that reached beyond church walls. His songs have been recorded and sung around the world, and his ministry legacy remains a foundation for today's worship culture.
