Beloved singer-songwriter JJ Heller is opening up about embracing authenticity and self-acceptance in a deeply personal reflection that's resonating with fans across generations. The heartfelt artist - known for her warm storytelling and soothing vocals - recently shared her journey of growing out her natural gray hair, a decision she describes as one of freedom, peace, and self-love.
"When I told my hairstylist I was considering growing out my gray hair, she immediately tried to talk me out of it," Heller recalls. "She said the silver tones probably wouldn't complement my skin color and that it would make me look older. I respected her opinion, so it really made me doubt my plan. But then I did it anyway!"
Now, nearly five years later, Heller says she's never been happier with her decision. "My hair grows pretty fast, so I was having to dye it every 3-4 weeks," she explains. "I didn't like the feeling of seeing my roots gradually appear over the course of the month. I also didn't like the emotional energy I was spending worrying about it ... not to mention the time at the salon and the cost!"
While she acknowledges that she might look younger if she continued dyeing her hair, Heller finds joy in embracing the beauty of her 44 years. "I actually really love so much about being middle-aged, and I've never felt more comfortable in my own skin," she shares. "For me, letting my silver hair sparkle feels like freedom. I'm embracing every beautiful year that's brought me here."
Her openness mirrors the themes of authenticity and hope that have always run through her music - songs that invite listeners to slow down, breathe deeply, and find beauty in the ordinary moments of life.
And just in time for the holiday season, JJ Heller is thrilled to announce the release of her brand-new Christmas album, a collection that celebrates warmth, nostalgia, and the quiet magic of the season. Featuring original songs alongside timeless classics, the project continues Heller's tradition of music that brings comfort and light to listeners' hearts.
The new album will be available on all streaming platforms this November.
