Three-time World Series champion and former Major League Baseball pitcher Jeremy Affeldt is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated new book, Built for the Storm: Weathering the Storms of Life with Grit, Faith, and Determination. Set for release today, November 4, 2025, the book is now available to order, including exclusive personally signed copies HERE. The audiobook, narrated by Affeldt himself, will be available soon.
In "Built for the Storm," Affeldt delivers a candid and deeply personal reflection on the battles he has faced beyond the baseball field -- divorce, personal failure, and emotional exhaustion. Though celebrated for his composure under pressure as a San Francisco Giant, Affeldt reveals that his toughest challenges were the unseen ones.
The book offers behind-the-scenes moments such as pitching with double vision in Game 7 of the 2014 World Series, but its message reaches far beyond baseball. At its heart, "Built for the Storm" is a story of hope, resilience and faith for anyone navigating life's hardest seasons.
"You weren't built to run away from the storms, you were built to walk through it," Affeldt writes. "With God, with trusted people, and with courage. That's what I've learned, and that's what I want to pass on in this book."
More than a memoir, "Built for the Storm" equips readers with a toolkit for enduring and growing through life's fiercest challenges. With vulnerability, wisdom, and hard-won perspective, Affeldt explores themes such as:
- How to face personal crisis with honesty, courage, and faith
- Lessons learned from navigating divorce, loss, and identity struggles
- The importance of trusted community, "he "herd," when walking through pain
- Leadership and resilience under pressure, both on and off the field
- Understanding the "buffalo mentality" and why it leads to faster healing
- How spiritual growth and vulnerability are key to transformation
- What it means to move forward after failure and find purpose again
Throughout "Built for the Storm," Affeldt introduces readers to what he calls the "buffalo mentality," a concept rooted in the way buffalo instinctively run into storms rather than away from them, shortening the hardship by facing it head-on. He writes that people, like buffalo, aren't meant to go it alone and that walking through pain with the right community can be transformational.
For Affeldt, this book is the product of years of personal struggle and spiritual growth. "I tried to write this book before, but the timing wasn't right," he says. "My life was falling apart, and I didn't yet have the clarity or healing to tell the story. It wasn't until I experienced God's restoration and a new beginning with my wife Candace that I knew I could finally write it. These lessons are fresh, real, and tested. I want people to know that storms don't have to destroy them, it can change them for the better."
Though Affeldt draws from his baseball career, "Built for the Storm" is not just a sports book. The 144-page title fits within faith-based nonfiction, personal development, and inspirational leadership. It explores themes of spiritual growth, emotional resilience, and the importance of community through life's most difficult moments.
"Built for the Storm" is published by Tatanka Publishing and is available HERE, Amazon, and at Free Roam Brewery in Boerne, Texas.
