Jake Gyllenhaal New 'Southpaw' Movie Stars Rachel McAdams, Naomie Harris, 50 Cent, Forest Whitaker and More
Jake Gyllenhaal is starring in the upcoming boxing-drama movie Southpaw and they have released their new trailer, which you can check out above.
The 33-year-old actor is playing a boxer who is fighting his way to the top while his life is seemingly falling apart around him. Southpaw also stars Rachel McAdams, Naomie Harris, 50 Cent, Forest Whitaker, and more.
Forest Whitaker will be playing the fighter's mentor, a former boxer himself, and Rachel McAdams will be the love interest for Gyllenhaal's protagonist. The film was written by "Sons of Anarchy" writer creator Kurt Sutter.
Southpaw centers on a troubled fighter with dreams of becoming a welterweight champion, whose personal life crumbles even as his career soars. Harris will play Angela, a social worker who works with Gyllenhaal's character and his daughter.
Naomie Harris is becoming a big name is her roles as Moneypenny in Skyfall and Winnie Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom under her belt.
There is no official release date set yet for Southpaw to hit theaters.
Screenwriter Sutter said the project was inspired by Eminem's struggles and originally wanted him to play the lead. He shared that he took meetings with Marshall's producing partners over the past 7 years, looking for something to do together.
"I know he's very selective and doesn't do a lot. But he shared so much of his personal struggle in this raw and very honest album, one that I connected with on a lot of levels. He is very interested in the boxing genre, and it seemed like an apt metaphor, because his own life has been a brawl. In a way, this is a continuation of the 8 Mile story, but we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life. He'll play a world champion boxer who really hits a hard bottom, and has to fight to win back his life for his young daughter. At its core, this is a retelling of his struggles over the last five years of his life, using the boxing analogy. I love that the title refers to Marshall being a lefty, which is to boxing what a white rapper is to hip hop; dangerous, unwanted and completely unorthodox. It's a much harder road for a southpaw than a right handed boxer. There is a rich story here that references his own experience, and I was honored to be able to continue a relationship that began with 8 Mile."
