Former Hillsong Pastors Carl And Laura Lentz Turn Their Infidelity Scandal Into A Marriage Book

Carl and Laura Lentz are turning the scandal that nearly destroyed their marriage into a new book designed to help other couples confront betrayal.

The former Hillsong Church pastor and his wife have announced Overcoming Infidelity: 10 Conversations to Help You Heal the Hurt, a deeply personal mixture of memoir and relationship guide scheduled for release by Simon & Schuster on October 20.

Laura promoted the book with a strikingly candid admission about what happened inside their marriage.

"Infidelity broke something in us," she wrote. "It's one of the most painful things a couple can go through-the shattered trust, the endless questions, the grief for the relationship you thought you had."

The announcement revisits one of the most explosive church scandals of 2020. Carl was dismissed from Hillsong after admitting that he had been unfaithful to Laura during their marriage. His fall was particularly dramatic because he had become one of the megachurch's most recognizable pastors, known for his celebrity connections, fashionable image, and leadership of Hillsong's New York City congregation.

Carl and Laura remained married, but Laura's new message does not pretend that reconciliation followed one emotional apology or miraculous breakthrough.

"Carl and I lived through it," she explained. "And what got us to the other side wasn't one big breakthrough-it was conversations we'd had. Hard ones. Honest ones. The kind most couples never quite have the courage or the roadmap to start."

Those conversations provide the structure for the book. Rather than presenting themselves as experts who have neatly finished their recovery, the Lentzes describe healing as continuing work. The ten discussions reportedly include painful subjects such as how to tell children about infidelity, how to face the injured spouse's pain, and how to begin rebuilding trust after deception.

"We're not writing from a place of arrival," the couple previously said in a statement. "The title is intentional. Overcoming infidelity is very different than claiming we've overcome it."

That distinction may be crucial for readers who remain skeptical of Carl's return to public ministry and media. The book does not promise that every betrayed spouse should remain in the marriage, nor does it present reconciliation as the only faithful response.

"It's not a book about staying together no matter what," Laura emphasized. "It's a book about choosing to heal, choosing health, and doing the deep work that makes real reconciliation possible."

Laura has previously revealed that it took until October 2023-almost three years after Carl's affair became public-for her to tell him that she had forgiven him. She described lowering her defenses as a frightening decision because trusting again meant making herself vulnerable to further pain.

Carl, meanwhile, has spoken about apologizing to people he hurt and rebuilding his relationship with God. He and Laura now co-host the Lights On podcast, where they discuss their marriage, family, scandal, rehabilitation, and continuing process of restoration.

Their decision to publish a book about infidelity will undoubtedly divide opinion. Some readers will see their survival as a testimony to forgiveness and grace. Others may question whether a former celebrity pastor should turn his highly publicized moral failure into another commercial platform.

The Lentzes appear aware of that tension. Their stated purpose is not to announce that their marriage has been perfectly repaired but to share the practices that have helped them continue choosing honesty, connection, and growth.

"We have found that the worst chapter of your life doesn't have to be the defining one," they said.

For Christian couples, the book enters difficult territory where repentance, forgiveness, consequences, safety, and reconciliation cannot be reduced to inspirational slogans. Forgiveness does not erase the damage caused by betrayal, and reconciliation requires more than the unfaithful spouse asking to be trusted again. It demands truth, accountability, patience, and a willingness to accept that healing cannot be rushed.

Laura nevertheless insists that couples living through the devastation of an affair should not assume that their current pain determines the ending of their story.

"If you're in it right now, I want you to know: it can end differently than you think," she wrote. "Healing is possible. Hope is real."
