NBC4 reporter Eliana Moreno had been looking forward to walking down the aisle before her life was tragically cut short in a fiery helicopter crash over Los Angeles.
Moreno, 38, proudly announced her engagement to Robert Barrientos on social media in October 2025. Photographs captured the beaming journalist displaying her engagement ring as family and friends celebrated the couple's happy news. Less than a year later, Barrientos and Moreno's loved ones are confronting an unimaginable loss.
Moreno and veteran pilot George Marciniw were working aboard NewsChopper4 on Tuesday evening when the aircraft crashed in Chatsworth and burst into flames. They had been covering a separate fatal collision involving an SUV and a Metro bus when the helicopter went down shortly before 7 p.m. A third victim, 29-year-old Edy Gutiérrez Mejia, was killed on the ground, while two other people were hospitalized. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Known affectionately online as "Eli in the Heli," Moreno had reported from Southern California's skies since 2010. The bilingual journalist supplied aerial coverage for both NBC4 Los Angeles and Telemundo 52, reporting on police pursuits, wildfires, traffic emergencies and other major breaking stories.
Behind the professional voice viewers heard from the sky was a woman whose social-media pages revealed a joyful personal life. Moreno described herself as a dog and chicken mom and frequently shared glimpses of her animals, her work and her adventures with Barrientos.
The engaged couple completed the Orange County Half Marathon together in May. Reflecting on that accomplishment, Moreno wrote that she had surpassed everything she thought she could do and wondered what she might accomplish next. The hopeful post has now taken on a heartbreaking significance.
Colleagues remembered Moreno as a gifted journalist with an unusually generous spirit. NBC4's Lynette Romero described her as "such a light" and a woman with "the biggest heart." Her alma mater, Chapman University, also honored its 2010 graduate, expressing gratitude that she had pursued her passion for journalism and storytelling.
Marciniw, who had more than 30 years of aviation experience, had worked alongside Moreno since 2023. Together, the pair became known within the newsroom as its "eyes and ears in the sky."
NBC4 and Telemundo 52 said they were deeply saddened by the fatal accident and extended their condolences to the victims' families, friends and colleagues. As the investigation continues, prayers are being offered for Barrientos, Moreno's family, Marciniw's loved ones, the family of Gutiérrez Mejia and a newsroom suddenly grieving two familiar faces.
Moreno spent her career helping Southern Californians understand emergencies unfolding beneath her. Now, those viewers are remembering not only the trusted voice above Los Angeles but also the bride-to-be whose anticipated future ended far too soon.
