Tyler Perry's Doing Life is finding a substantial audience on Netflix, turning a story of hardship, redemption and unexpected love into a global Top 10 entry. The romantic drama debuted at No. 3 among English-language films, generating 9.3 million views and 16.8 million hours watched during its opening three days following its October 2 release.
The film's momentum continued into its first full week. Netflix's latest chart lists Doing Life at No. 2 with another 18.2 million views and 32.8 million hours watched, bringing its combined view count across the two reporting periods to 27.5 million. Those figures mark a growing audience for Perry's latest exploration of people trying to rebuild their lives.
Starring Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves, Doing Life centers on a struggling single mother and a formerly incarcerated man whose unexpected connection offers both a chance to start again. Their relationship places questions of hope and redemption within the everyday pressures of survival, family responsibilities and moving beyond a painful past.
Perry has said the characters grew out of people he has encountered personally. "I've had people in my life who reminded me of both of these characters," he told PEOPLE, explaining that he drew inspiration from single mothers working to provide for their children and people seeking a fresh start after prison.
For audiences drawn to stories of forgiveness and second chances, the film presents a relationship shaped by the possibility of change. Its premise asks viewers to consider what happens when two people carrying difficult histories recognize hope in each other-a theme that gives the romance its emotional stakes.
Perry wrote and directed Doing Life and produced it alongside Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland. The supporting cast includes Tamberla Perry, Karen Obilom, Jasmine Sargent, Danielle Moné Truitt and Cornell Young IV, adding another ensemble drama to his continuing creative partnership with Netflix.
Doing Life is now streaming on Netflix. Viewers can watch the film and its official trailer on the Netflix title page.
