New Matrix Trilogy: Release Date, Possible Storyline and Keanu Reeves Back as Neo

With all the battle of the big franchises in Hollywood, it would come as no surprise if Warner Bros. is really considering a new trilogy for "The Matrix." You've heard the rumors before, and now the rumors are back. It's been quite some time since the last film was released back in November 2003. So is it about time fans and viewers get to see a brand new Matrix trilogy?

Latino Review reported earlier this year that Andy and Lana Wachowski have started working for the new Matrix trilogy, also adding that the writing process is in its early stages and that it has already been pitched to the studio. On whether Warner Bros. has really picked it up or that they have been negotiating since the news broke out, we can never really tell as of the moment.

The report also added that the film could be released by 2017, as Warner Bros. is really looking for a new big franchise to compete with the likes of the upcoming "Star Wars Episode VII" and "Avatar 3" that are both set for release that year. It also teased that Keanu Reeves will be back as Neo. And that the storyline would focus on previous versions of Neo; as hinted by The Architect in the second Matrix movie that Neo is not the only "One." However, it could also explore how The Matrix was created. There isn't news either if the Wachowski siblings would be back to direct.

And while everything hasn't been confirmed, Warner Bros. revisiting one of their most successful franchises is not so far-fetched. With the franchise bringing in $1.632 billion in worldwide box office for Warner Bros., other franchises would really have a huge competitor if the franchise comes back.

"The Matrix" was released March 31, 1999, with sequels "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions" released in 2003. It stars Keanu Reeves, Hugo Weaving, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss.
