New show: Gotham release, spoilers, news: Airing on September 22, series will focus on Commissioner James Gordon's beginnings as a young detective, other Batman characters to make appearances

"Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon...He is one of the crime lord's greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon's story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner?"

That in a nutshell is the synopsis of "Gotham," the new Batman-inspired TV series, which airs this September 22 on FOX. "Gotham" takes a look into the life of Gordon and how he came to be the man that he is.

Creator Bruno Heller describes the tone of the series as somewhere between the original "Batman" show and the "Dark Knight" movies.

"If it fell anywhere, it's between those two in the sense that it pays due homage to the dystopian world of modern Batman, but it also has some of the humor and fun of the old show. You couldn't do a campy show like Adam West's 'Batman' anymore, nor would a bleak, dystopian version of the story work on TV," he said in an interview.

"Gotham" spoilers: series Director Danny Cannon revealed that viewers will see the backstories of iconic "Batman" villains such as Poison Ivy, The Joker, Riddler, Two-Face, Penguin, and Catwoman.

While they are not central to the story, fans will also see a lot of a young Bruce Wayne and his butler, Alfred in "Gotham".

"Gotham" stars Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon, David Mazouz as a young Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, and Jada Pinkette Smith as Fish Mooney.
