NFL Trade Rumors: It's Official, Ryan Mallett is Traded to Houston Texans
It has long been rumored that New England Patriots has been seriously considering trading its quarterback Ryan Mallett, and now it has become official. Ryan Mallett gets traded as a new member of the Houston Texans. The patriots was impressed with Jimmy Garoppolo's powerful pre-season play, thus eventually choosing him for the second round pick; which paved the way for the decision to let Mallett go. Initial report was made by NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport.
Mallett, who is rated by the Patriots as the best quarterback at the 2011 draft, according to NFL Network's Michael Lombardi. He was drafted by the New England Patriots during the 2011 third round when Bill OBrien, the new head coach of Houston Texans was the New England Patriots' quarterbacks coach and also offensive coordinator; which means it's quite a reunion for Mallett and OBrien.
Despite being the third-string quarterback to Patriots co-quarterbacks Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer, combined with not so great performance at the pre-season; he still made a lot of progress since being drafted and what he could bring for the Houston Texans should still be something notable. Before being traded from Patriots, Mallett was able to record solid numbers during the second and third round games.
In the meantime, Houston Texans has Ryan Fitzpatrick as starter and Tom Savage - the fifth rounder draft. It is also known that the Texans won't have a long-term commitment to Mallett as of yet until a full season assessment. The Patriots is also likely to sign a third quarterback with Jeff Matthews.
