Top Gun 2 Release Date, News and Update: Writer in Negotiation to write the Sequel 

Screenwriter Justin Marks is in deep negotiations with Paramount and Skydance to join the team of writers to helm the script of Top Gun 2.

Top Gun was a highly successful drama released back in 1980, and back in 2012 a sequel was being planned. When director Tony Scott however took his own life, pre-production for the film didn't halter, and plans for it went forward with writer Peter Craig, who wrote The Town, being the first screenwriter to be hired for the project. Justin Marks is recently working with Disney for The Jungle Book  which will be directed by Iron Man director Jon Favreau.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is one of the people who is keeping the project going, and it seems to stem from the fact that he also worked on the original film. Bruckheimer moved to Paramount when his contract with Disney expired. Marks and Bruckheimer have had previously worked together on a film about military canines but it never came to fruition. The Jungle Book might just redeem Marks for his previous work Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li which was generally panned by critics and fans, and hasn't made a feature film since then.

Details for the plot of the sequel has been scarce, but it has been said that the sequel will still center on Tom Cruise's Maverick, and will be about manned aircrafts versus drones. There has been no official announcement on which of the original cast will be returning for the sequel. With a new writer onboard this could either mean production of the film will accelerate or it may just stop. If the studios lose interest because of a poorly written script, then Top Gun 2 may not happen.
