Sherlock Season 4 News, Release date: Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return in 2016; BBC reveals one-episode special before the premiere
Sherlock Season 4 news: following its tradition of having a two-year gap in between seasons, Sherlock Season 4 release date is set for 2016. Fans however are in for a treat as there will be a one-episode special before the Sherlock Season 4 premiere.
Martin Freeman, who plays Dr. Watson on the series, reveals as much. "There is an idea for this one-off special that's such a good idea," he said. "As I was listening to it, I thought 'we've just got to do this.' It's a fantastic, really mouth-watering idea. But I really don't know when we are going to get to do it."
What to expect in Sherlock Season 4? Apart from unexpected twists and a darker tone, here are other plot possibilities:
Moriarty may not come back for Sherlock Season 4. The character shot himself in the face at the end of Sherlock Season 3, and is considered dead.
Watson becomes a father. Mary Morstan was pregnant with Watson's child in Sherlock Season 3, and appeared to be on her third trimester. This will change the dynamics of Sherlock and Watson's relationship in Sherlock Season 4. It will also be interesting to see what kind of parents the two will be.
Fans to see more of the women. Molly and Mrs. Hudson (played by Una Stubbs) will have more scenes in Sherlock Season 4, giving the show a different perspective.
Romance in the cards for Molly and Sherlock? The two's kiss in Sherlock Season 3 got a lot of raves from fans. "I got 7,000 Twitter followers within five minutes of that kiss airing. It had doubled by the time the episode ended," said Louise Brealey, who plays Molly.Could that lead to something more? We'll find out in the next season.
Tom Hiddleston might be the third Holmes brother. Sherlock's creative team will probably introduce another Holmes brother to Sherlock Season 4. Rumors have it that Tom Hiddleston is being tapped to play the role. If this is confirmed, it will definitely be a casting coup for the series!
