NBA News: Pacers Star George Paul Pulls Down, Says Sorry for Coarse Tweets Defending Suspended NFL's Ray Rice's 'Elevator Incident'
NBA star George Paul of the Indiana Pacers on Thursday apologized for a series of tweets regarding a domestic violence incident involving Baltimore Ravens' running back Ray Rice who was indefinitely suspended by the NFL according to an ESPN NBA news report. He also reportedly deleted the tweets from his Twitter page.
To fans offended by his previous posts, he tweeted: "Let me apologize to the women and to the VICTIMS of domestic violence people my intent was not to downplay the situation.." Through the Pacers, he issued another public apology, saying: "I want to apologize to all victims of domestic abuse for my insensitive tweets. They were obviously without proper understanding of the seriousness of the situation, and I sincerely regret my poor choice of words."
Pacers President, NBA Hall-of-Famer Larry Bird also released a strongly-worded public statement chastising Paul's Twitter comments about the Ray Rice situation with the NFL. Says Bird: "Paul George's tweets from earlier were thoughtless and without regard to the subject of domestic violence and its seriousness in society. We have talked to Paul to strongly express our displeasure and made it clear that the NBA and the Pacers' organization will not condone or tolerate remarks of this nature. Paul understands that he was wrong and why his tweets were so inappropriate and is very apologetic."
Back in February, Rice was caught on security camera punching his fiancee, now his wife, Janay unconscious inside an elevator at an Atlantic City casino. Then Rice was seen dragging her limp body out. Rice was later arrested and indicted on a charge of third-degree aggravated assault. He was also suspended by NFL and, on Monday, was released by his team. Following the suspension announcement, Paul took to Twitter to express his disappointment. One of the tweets he deleted reads: "If you in a relationship and a woman hit you first and attacking YOU.. Then you obviously ain't beatin HER. Homie made A bad choice!"
