Google Affordable Phone - 'Android One' Is Finally Here!
Google recently announced the release of three smartphones, as part of the company's effort, to offer affordable quality smartphones. Introducing, the Android One. Google's hardware partners are Micromax, Karbonn, Spice, while the device's chipmaker is MediaTek. The initial price for the Android One will start at Rs 6,399 or roughly about $105. It's going to be available in India first, and later this year, Android One is going to be available in Indonesia, Philippines, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. More countries will be added by 2015.
Google partnered with Acer, ASUS, HTC, and Lenovo to make affordable smartphones. Compared to other entry-level device, Android One offers high-level specifications. Android One has both front (5 megapixel) and rear-facing camera (2 megapixel) and it features dual SIM card slots, a replaceable battery and a built-in FM radio. Other specifications include 1GB of RAM and a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processors.
Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president for Android, Chrome, and Apps, believed that the "price point" and the quality of the product is enough to entice new customers. He added, "This gives us an opportunity to expand the market significantly. We see a lot of opportunity going ahead."
Pichai said that Android One will solve software problems commonly encountered by smartphone users. Android One will also include Google Translate "with Hindi-English-Hindi" package. Google Now is only included with a primary focus on cricket.
If Google succeeds, with the launch of Android One, this will make way for affordable yet quality smartphones. As Apple continues to shy away in producing budget-friendly smartphones, Android phones will continue to dominate that market segment. And hopefully, Google can really deliver a reasonably priced quality smartphone.
Android One is just one of the many devices, who wants to penetrate the market of the "$100 smartphones." Companies like Xiaomi are joining the trend and is actually doing great. Let's see where will Google take its consumers in the smartphone industry.
