Agents of SHIELD Season 2: More of Agent Melinda May, "The Cavalry" Backstory in Upcoming New Season, Premieres this September 23

Agents of SHIELD is renewed for a second season, scheduled for release on September 23, and this time, we may finally find out why Melinda May, one of the best SHIELD agents, didn't want to be back in the line of duty.

Agent Melinda May, played by actress Ming-Na Wen, is heavily featured in the recent promotional photos and videos for the upcoming new season. It looks like we're going to see a lot more of her in action, and a lot more of what she's capable of.

That said, the upcoming new season 2 will reveal more of agent May's backstory. The series' executive producer Jed Whedon recently told Entertainment Weekly, "She's gone through something crazy in Bahrain that we've hinted at and we will explore in this season".

Agent May is also called "The Cavalry" for a reason. In Bahrain, the agent was on a mission and her team was taken hostage, but she was able to rescue and free all of the hostages, both her team and other civilians involved. However, agent May appears to despise her nickname, suggesting that there was something more to that mission in Bahrain. Many assume that the Bahrain mission is the cause of Melinda May's seemingly detached personality.

There are a few things we already know about agent May from the previous season. We know that she comes from a family of agents in the intelligence community. We also know that May has an ex-husband. It is possible that her former husband is involved in the Bahrain mission.

Agents of SHIELD season 2 premieres Tuesday, September 23 at 9PM on ABC.
