'The Simpsons': Could Death Character Leap The Ratings?
Sometimes it's really hard to think of a new formula for a show especially when it's been running almost every storyline there is. What new concept could be created after small and big episodes? 'The Simpsons' is not an exemption. After their first run on the television on Dec. 17, 1989, the American animated sitcom has become a household name and has indeed, ran almost every storyline there is.
It's true that the show has a total of 552 episodes in 26 seasons. It's hard to maintain such record and only 'the Simpsons' did it. Considering that it is an animation, this is a mean feat. With the aim to offer a new concept, 'character deaths' are said to have been considered for its season premiere last Sunday. The Simpsons' on its 26th season premiere episode entitled "Clowns in the Dumps" is said to bring about the death of a Springfield inhabitant.
Upon hearing about the spoiler, fans could not really believe it and many came up with allegations as to what character will be axed. The curiousity translated to ratings and the scheme by the management and the writers worked!
On the particular episide, the show garnered its highest-rated premiere in years. Ultimately, it was revealed that Rabbi Krustofski, (Jackie Mason), father of Krusty the Clown (Dan Castellaneta) is the one due to old age.
Even though it is indeed a big character, and someone fans have gotten attached to, many also said the episode was overhyped to garner ratings. Many expected a more important character to die and many tuned in on the episode to find out who. Many fans actually feel deceived that it is not an iconic character who bite the dust. Producers of the show defended their decision.
"I've done everything I can to temper any disappointment by saying that, although the press is claiming this is an 'iconic' character, we never said that. We just said it's a 'beloved' character. I think it may have become overhyped, though I've never heard the term 'under hyped,' before. Either way, it's an emotional story, and it's one we're really proud of," executive producer of the show, Al Jean told TV Line.
Considering Fox still hasn't stop telling about a 'character death' and elaborating that there is a major character death that could take place in the upcoming episodes, many are starting to think that it is all about ratings rather than storyline at play here. This proves that the strange tactic seems more of ratings plot and not of some emotional melodramatic approach for the animated series.
The death plot that took place in the show can be comparable to the "Family Guy", a Fox animated show. With their "Crossover" episode featuring the Simpsons, Brian (Seth MacFarlane) was killed. However, unlike the father of Krusty the Clown, killing off Brian, the Griffin's family dog, caused an uproar. As Brian is an important and iconic character, many fans were very much affected.
