'Dracula Untold' Should Have Stayed Untold: Critic; Luke Evans Stole Ben Affleck's 'Gone Girl' Box Office No. 1 Spot?
Despite its successful debut, "Dracula Untold" has received negative reviews.
While it intended to offer different take on a vampire story, the film is said to fall apart in its final 20 minutes when the lead character Vlad appears to have motivations that are difficult to be pinned down in a single focus.
In terms of direction and story, "Dracula Untold" was criticized for its attempt to offer heavy views on sacrifice and faith but it was done in a very superficial way.
In particular, the film starring Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon and Dominic Cooper appeared to be the first act of a superhero film stretched to become a feature-length movie, which makes viewers reluctant to see its second act, according to Breitbart.
On the other hand, director Gary Shore told Screen Rant if he were to approach "Dracula Untold" again, he would love to "explore something in between 1460s and modern day" as there are many parts of history within Europe he could "just do something that we haven't seen with a Dracula film."
For Shore, "Dracula Untold" does not limit the scope or the possibilities of where the audience could go with the story.
Between what happens in his recent film and what happened in Bram Stoker's novel are only over 450 years with approximately 114 year after for a modern day angle.
Shore explained "Dracula Untold" is "divorced from Bram Stoker's novel."
"If an audience really digs this and they go out and they enjoy the film, the next step obviously would be to take that character and start really delving into the true darkness of who Dracula is," Shore added.
The director also admitted he is looking forward to making a "Dracula Untold" sequel but it depends on the response from the audience in terms of box office numbers.
Earning over $23 million on its debut, "Dracula Untold" ranks number two at the weekend box office, failing to steal the number one spot from David Fincher's "Gone Girl" starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris with $28 on its second week, Deadline has learned.
At number three is "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" starring Affleck's wife Jennifer Garner with $20 million followed by the horror flick "Annabelle" with $16 million and "The Judge" with $13 million.
