Kingdom Hearts 3 News Update: Switching from Luminous Studio to Unreal Engine 4, Game Director Nomura says Kingdom Hearts 3 is "Progressing Smoothly"
It was previously announced that the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3 video game will be using Square Enix's latest engine - the Luminous Studio. However, the company recently announced that they are switching the game's development to Unreal Engine 4.
Kingdom Hearts 3 director Tetsuya Nomura told Famitsu, "Due to the impact of changing the game engine to Unreal Engine 4, which we did for various reasons, there is some difficulty rendering images, and with the full support of Epic Games, we'll be able to progress smoothly."
Otherwise, Nomura confirms that the game is "progressing smoothly", and he left the production of Final Fantasy 15 to focus on the upcoming Kingdom Hearts game.
Kingdom Hearts 3 will see the return of Riku, Donald Duck, Goofy, King Mickey, and other characters already familiar to Kingdom Hearts game players.
As for the premise of the game, Sora, Donald and Goofy will go on a search for the seven guardians of the light and the 'Key to Return Hearts'. Riku and King Mickey will look for previous Keyblade wielders to stop Master Xehanort from balancing the light and darkness. This will later lead to the final battle between Sora and Master Xehanort.
Kingdom Hearts 3 will be available for PlayStation4 and Xbox One. The upcoming Kingdom hearts will be the final chapter to the "Dark Seeker" saga.
