NBA News: MVP Kevin Durant May Need To Undergo Surgery For Foot Fracture
Reigning NBA MVP Kevin Durant will be out six to eight weeks with what is being described as a "Jones fracture" in his right foot, according to official league news.
Sam Presti, Oklahoma City Thunder's executive vice president and general manager, on Sunday said: "After practice yesterday, Kevin made us aware of discomfort in his right foot. We proceeded to perform the necessary imagining studies to determine the cause of his discomfort. At this stage, Kevin has been diagnosed with a Jones fracture. Traditional treatment of this injury requires a surgical procedure and recent NBA cases have resulted in a return to play in 6-8 weeks. We are in the process of collaboratively evaluating the most appropriate next steps with Kevin, his representatives, and Thunder medical personnel. Until a course of action is determined, we are unable to provide a timeline specific to Kevin's case."
Durant will be the latest addition to the Thunder's list of injured players which now already includes point guard Russel Westbrook who has a torn meniscus, rookie forward Mitch McGary who also has a fractured bone in his foot, and backup point guard Reggie Jackson who has an injured wrist. Durant averaged 20.8 field goals and 9.9 free throw attempts per game last season so his being out for the first two months of the season will be a major setback for the Thunder. The foot fracture is the first significant injury Durant, who missed only six games over the last five years, has ever suffered in his entire career.
In related news, following being named NBA MVP, Durant was also chosen to be the NBA 2K15 cover athlete. Of course, the modest Durant told his fans in a Twitter message that ""I begged them to put me on the cover. I don't think anybody plays the game [@NBA2K] as much as I do. It's so authentic." -@KDTrey- NBA 2K 2K15 (@NBA2K) May 6, 2014." Durant also made the cover of the 2K13 video game but back then, he shared the glory space with two others - Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose and Los Angeles' Clippers' Blake Griffin.
On his Facebook page, the 25-year old proudly posted, "2 life goals in the same day! So grateful. #YourTimeHasCome #MVP # NBA 2K15 2K."
