William H. Macy's Directorial Debut 'Rudderless' Gets A Thumbs Up!
"Rudderless" is the first film ever directed by William H. Macy, who is no stranger to working with great directors and it's no surprise that he picked up a few pointers on how to be a good director himself.
The script about a father who struggles to overcome the untimely death of his son is a collaboration between Casey Twenter and Jeff Robinson, who have been writing together for more than ten years, according to TulsaWorld,
"Rudderless" script is something that they want to share or give to the veteran actor William H. Macy; but of course, they know that it's not going to be easy. So they did their best and gave the script to one of Macy's people. They were really hoping but are keeping their expectation low.
Twenter said, "So it's 10 days later, and I get an email from Bill (Macy), and he's saying he's interested in making our movie. So I call Jeff, and he's convinced that it's an April Fool's joke. People we know learn about it, and they all think it's an April Fool's joke."
"Rudderless" is about the life of Sam, a role brilliantly played by Billy Crudup.
Sam is an executive in an advertising company and he seems to be living a perfect life. But everything took a turn for the worst when his son became one of the victims of college shooting tragedy, according to Indiewire,
The movie didn't focus on that though. It gave more weight on how to move on after such tragedy. Sam's life is in shambles. He stopped working and even after several years, he still wasn't able to cope up with the tragedy - until he found a compilation of songs written by his son and was able to make a difference in the life of another teenager.
Critics are all in praise for Macy. All are impressed as to how he took the feel into the next level and how "Rudderless" is not your typical "musical film" and it is not also a typical "drama about violence" movie. It managed to take the beauty on both genre and rolled it into one. It is not overwhelmingly musical and yes, it is heartbreaking, but there's some lightness to the general feel of the film.
