Spurgeon’s College to Close After 169 Years of Service

Spurgeon’s College

Spurgeon's College, one of the UK's oldest theological institutions, has announced its immediate closure after 169 years of service. Founded in 1856 by the renowned Baptist preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the College has trained generations of pastors, missionaries, and Christian leaders who have served communities worldwide.

The decision to close follows a ruling by the Office for Students (OfS) which, despite the College meeting four out of five required benchmarks, concluded that it failed the financial sustainability test. College leaders strongly dispute the OfS's financial assessment, arguing that it relied on flawed assumptions. The loss of a critical funding partnership on July 21, 2025, further deepened the financial crisis, leaving the College insolvent and unable to continue operations.

Approximately 200 students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate theology programs are affected by the closure. The OfS is working with other higher education providers, including Liverpool Hope University and the University of Manchester, to ensure that students can transfer and complete their studies. The Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIAHE) has confirmed that students may submit complaints until at least July 2026, though compensation options will be limited due to the College's closure. The Baptist Union of Great Britain has also expressed its deep sorrow over the news and has launched a Student Support Centre to assist affected students in finding alternative training paths.

In a statement, the College's trustees said, "Our immediate priority is to protect the interests of our students and staff. We have worked tirelessly to find a sustainable path forward. It is with heavy hearts that we share this news and express deep gratitude to all who have supported the College throughout its history."

Spurgeon's College leaves behind a legacy of nearly 170 years of theological education, shaping leaders who will continue to carry forward its mission across the globe.
