Iron Man 4 News: No Plan for a Fourth Iron Man, Says Robert Downey Jr.

There won't be an Iron Man 4 movie after all. Robert Downey Jr himself said so. In an interview with Variety, the star categorically stated: "There isn't one in the pipe. No, there's no plan for a fourth 'Iron Man.'" When asked if he would allow 'Tony Stark' to be played by somebody else, he replied, "I like that the idea is that it would be up to me, like I'm casting director for Marvel." Of course he's not Marvel's casting director, and it's not up to him whether or not someone else will play 'Tony Stark' for an Iron Man 4 movie, if ever there will be one.

But Downey's Tony Stark/Iron Man will be seen again in Avengers: Age of Ultron which will be shown in theaters on May 1, 2015, and in the planned, still untitled Avengers 3 movie which will likely be released in 2018. Downey's contract with Marvel ends with Avengers 3, a crossover story arc involving the Guardians of the Galaxy.

As things now stand, it seems clear that an Iron Man 4 movie isn't part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's plans for at least the next three or four years. Aside from the still untitled Avengers 3 movie, the studio has confirmed that it is, or would soon be, working on Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Captain America 3, Thor 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. It has also been rumored that Marvel intends to develop standalone films for Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow and for the Black Panther who may be introduced in the Avengers 3 movie.

The 49-year-old Downey and his wife Susan are currently busy promoting their new production company's first film offering - The Judge. It stars Downey, Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga, Vincent D'Onofrio, Dax Shepard, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Lancaster and Billy Bob Thornton. Of that film, which will be released on October 10, Downey told Variety it's possible to do a trilogy.
