Chart Rewind: PJ Morton’s Gospel According to PJ Hits #1 on Billboard Top Gospel Albums September 2020
September 2020 marked a milestone moment in gospel music history as multi-GRAMMY® Award winner PJ Morton soared to the top of the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart with his project Gospel According to PJ. The album debuted at #1, solidifying Morton's place as one of the most dynamic voices bridging gospel, R&B, and soul.
Released in August 2020 on Morton Inspiration/Tyscot, Gospel According to PJ gathered an extraordinary lineup of gospel powerhouses, including Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Yolanda Adams, Commissioned, Smokie Norful, and The Clark Sisters. The collection not only celebrated Morton's gospel roots but also reimagined them for a new generation of listeners.
The chart-topping release came at a time when audiences were seeking encouragement and hope, and the album resonated deeply with both gospel loyalists and broader music fans. Billboard highlighted its impact, noting the project's immediate rise to the top of the genre's most competitive chart.
Reflecting on the moment, Morton shared, "This album was a full-circle experience for me. Gospel is where I started, and to see this project debut at #1 was confirmation that coming back to my foundation was the right thing at the right time."
Now, five years later, Gospel According to PJ remains a landmark release, remembered not only for its chart success but for how it united some of gospel music's greatest voices under one vision.
PJ Morton, best known as the keyboardist for Maroon 5 and for his celebrated solo work in R&B, pop, and soul, has also remained deeply rooted in the church tradition that shaped him. His artistry has earned him multiple GRAMMY® wins and a reputation for breaking barriers between genres, and Gospel According to PJ was his most personal project to date - a return to his musical foundation and a tribute to his father, Bishop Paul S. Morton.
