Neuroscientist Explains Charlie Kirk Never Felt Pain in Utah Valley University Assassination

Charlie Kirk

In the aftermath of the tragic assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, new insight has emerged about his final moments. Neuroscientist Derek Van Schaik explained that Kirk likely never knew he had been shot, losing consciousness in just four-tenths of a second after the bullet struck his neck.

According to Van Schaik, the rapid loss of consciousness meant there was no time for the brain to register fear, pain, or awareness. "The arm movement seen in the shocking footage is not recognition of what happened," he noted, "but an involuntary defensive reflex. To Charlie, his death would have felt like an abrupt blackout."

The assassination occurred on September 10, 2025, as Kirk addressed thousands at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center during his American Comeback Tour. A single bullet fired from a nearby rooftop struck him in the neck at approximately 12:23 p.m. Mountain Time. Emergency responders rushed him to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Law enforcement identified Tyler Robinson, 22, as the suspect. Robinson was apprehended following an intensive manhunt and has since been charged with aggravated murder. Prosecutors have stated their intent to seek the death penalty. Surveillance footage captured the alleged gunman fleeing across the rooftop seconds after the attack.

The assassination has also sparked scrutiny over event security. Officials confirmed that the venue had no metal detectors or bag checks in place, and experts have called for reforms to protect high-profile speakers at public events.

Kirk's family and Turning Point USA have requested privacy as they grieve, while expressing gratitude for the nationwide support and prayers. "Charlie dedicated his life to inspiring millions with his passion for faith, freedom, and the future of America," a Turning Point USA spokesperson said. "Though his voice has been silenced, his message will endure."
