Director Justin Lin Brings Missionary John Allen Chau’s Story to the Screen in "Last Days"

Justin Lin

Acclaimed filmmaker Justin Lin, best known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise and Star Trek Beyond, is turning his lens to one of the most controversial and compelling true stories of modern missions in his latest feature, Last Days. The film revisits the life and death of John Allen Chau, the 26-year-old missionary killed in 2018 while attempting to reach the isolated Sentinelese tribe on North Sentinel Island.

While Lin is not a Christian himself, his approach to Last Days is deeply human. "I didn't want to make a film that judged anyone," Lin explains. "I wanted to understand what drives someone to such conviction-what faith, courage, or obsession leads a person to risk everything for a calling."

The director spent nearly three years researching Chau's journals, correspondence, and the global reactions that followed his death. The film examines not only Chau's passion and preparation but also the ethical, cultural, and theological complexities surrounding his mission.

Last Days aims to open dialogue rather than deliver verdicts. "This story asks questions about belief, identity, and purpose," says Lin. "It's not about right or wrong-it's about the depth of human intent."

The film is currently in post-production, with a release expected in 2026. Produced by Lin's Perfect Storm Entertainment, Last Days promises to be a provocative exploration of faith, sacrifice, and cross-cultural encounter-seen through the eyes of a storyteller known for bringing intensity and empathy to the screen.

Lin is a Taiwanese-American director, producer, and writer whose films have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. His credits include Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, and Star Trek Beyond. Through his company Perfect Storm Entertainment, Lin continues to champion diverse storytelling that bridges cultures and perspectives.
